Any Questions? - Escape NY 2

Imagine Snake Plissken walking through an apocalyptic NYC street scene while listening to this.

This Any Questions? archival song idea titled Escape NY 2 is from the year 1996.  This is the second of 2 song ideas created while Escape from New York was playing in the background on the studio TV monitor.

The rhythmic pulse of this idea comes from a sequenced synth bass line on a Yamaha TG33.  It's accompanied by a sample played backwards on an Ensoniq EPS and a synth FX sound from the Yamaha TG33.

Any Questions? - Escape NY

This Any Questions? archival song idea titled Escape NY is from the year 1996.  Like our other song idea titles, it is named after what was playing on the studio TV monitor while it was being created.

Escape from New York is a 1981 science fiction action film directed by John Carpenter and starring Kurt Russell, Lee Van Cleef, Ernest Borgnine, Donald Pleasence, Isaac Hayes, Adrienne Barbeau, and Harry Dean Stanton.  I (Ttam Troll) have loved this film since I first saw it back in the early '80s.  I first saw it when my Dad, brother, and I rented it from a not so local video store.  Back then, our hometown didn't have a video rental store so we had to drive to distant towns to rent videos.  I have since seen it many times and own it on VHS, LaserDisc, DVD, Blu-ray, and Ultra HD 4K formats.  For the few that may not know about this film, I highly recommend it.  Check it out!

We used an E-MU Pro/Cussion drum module to create a basic drum beat and then added a synth bass line with a Korg Wavestation.  Synth pads and soft bells sounds were also added from the Korg Wavestation.  Most of our arpeggios from this time period were played on a Yamaha DX21 but the arpeggio in this song idea sounds too nuanced for the Yamaha DX21 so it was probably played on the Korg Wavestation.

This track was used as incidental music in the 2006 horror film, Frightworld.

Any Questions? - Demon Knight

This Any Questions? archival song idea titled Demon Knight is from the year 1996.  Like our other song idea titles, it is named after what was playing on the studio TV monitor while it was being created.

Demon Knight is a 1995 horror comedy starring Billy Zane, William Sadler, and Jada Pinkett.  mC2p4 and I (Ttam Troll) saw the movie in the theater and then later when it was released for the home market, we picked up the LaserDisc to sample from.  However, no samples from the movie made it into this song idea.

As with a lot of our song ideas from this period, we used an E-MU Pro/Cussion drum module to create a basic drum beat and then added a synth bass line with a Korg Wavestation.  mC2p4 added a few live cymbal hits and if you listen closely enough, you can also hear a faint buzzing sound like that which a fly would make.  I don't remember exactly how that was created but I assume it was also the Korg Wavestation.

This track never evolved past this early stage.  There's probably a reason for that...

Any Questions? - Smashing Babies (Remix)

In preparation for our Any Questions? - Don't Ask Tour in 1992, we reprogrammed and resequenced all of the songs from our Ensoniq ESQ-1 hardware based sequencing system to our new Atari 1040STe and Steinberg/Jones Cubase computer based sequencing system.

This process took a lot of time but it had some advantages.  We took the opportunity while revisiting these older songs to replace some of the sounds and samples from our older equipment with some of the newer gear (E-MU Pro/Cussion, Yamaha TG33, and Ensoniq EPS) we had acquired.  It also provided us the flexibility to more easily sync our accompanying multimedia horror show videos to the computer based sequencing system using SMPTE timecode for use in our live performances.

One of the songs that was reprogrammed and resequenced was a track titled Smashing Babies from our Illegitimate Release 1990 release.  This ended up being more of a remix of the original song rather than a straight forward conversion and we decided to record it on our Tascam 308/38 8-Track 1/2" Analog Tape Recording System.  For this remix, we added an extended intro to the song and replaced the Korg DDD-5 drum machine parts with E-MU Pro/Cussion sounds.  We also chose to replace mC2p4's backing vocal "baby screams" from the original 1990 recording with a Baby Herman (Who Framed Roger Rabbit) sample on our Ensoniq EPS sampler.

This remix remained unreleased until now.  I hope you enjoy it!

Any Questions? - Eating Band-Aids With Marmalade (Demo)

While listening to some old cassette recordings from the Floating Fish Studios archive, I came across this early demo of Eating Band-Aids With Marmalade from 1990.  This version of the song has a more ominous tone than the final released version from Any Questions? - Illegitimate Release 1990.

This demo was recorded live in the studio.  The drum beat was programmed on a Korg DDD-5 drum machine.  The main synth bass part was performed by mC2p4 on a Korg DW-6000 and Ttam Troll added sound effects on a Korg DW-8000 while improvising lyrics for the lead vocal.  Listen closely and you can also hear mC2p4 whispering "Marmalade" in the background.

Now get out those Band-Aids and enjoy them with some Marmalade while listening to this track!

Any Questions? - Copycat

This Any Questions? archival song idea titled Copycat is from the year 1996.  Like our other song idea titles, it is named after what was playing on the studio TV monitor while it was being created.  Copycat is a 1995 psychological thriller starring Sigourney Weaver, Holly Hunter, and Dermot Mulroney.  Coincidentally, this song idea made its way into a movie of its own in 2007 when it was featured in the horror film FrightWorld.  Be sure to check that out!

On this track, our trusty E-MU Pro/Cussion drum module was used to lay down the drum beat and the Korg Wavestation was used for the rest of the parts including the slinky synth bass line that slithers throughout the groove.

Any Questions? - Almost Dead

Song idea naming protocol at Floating Fish Studios has always been to use whatever is playing on the TV monitor in the studio at the time of creation.  This process leads to some interesting idea titles and provides insight into the video stimuli that influenced us during the creative process.

This track from 1996 is titled Almost Dead.  Almost Dead is a 1994 horror movie starring Shannen Doherty (Beverly Hills. 90210 fame).  She plays a psychologist that is haunted by her dead mother's ghost.  Instrumentally, we used some of our favorite instruments of the day.  The E-MU Pro/Cussion drum module for the drum beat and a lot of Korg Wavestation for the rest of the synth sounds.  The soloing guitar sound is even pulled out of the Korg Wavestation.

Imbued Vagary - Post Roast Beef Sandwich

Here's an excerpt of a live improv from FFS II Synth Jam 2022 - Birthday. Recorded at FFS II on 07/30/22.

Recorded after a dinner break (hence the song title), we wasted no time in working off our meal.  The track features Ttam Troll providing a sumptuous synth bass part on the Moog Minimoog Model D, mC2p4 effervescently refluxing forwards, backwards, and bi-directional audio collage samples on the Ensoniq EPS, and Steve O's delectable synth leads on the Korg Z1, Studiologic Sledge, and Kawai K5000S.

Floating Fish Studios Year in Review (2021)

Floating Fish Studios released 9 new CDs in 2021.  These include 7 releases of new music from Electronic artist, Imbued Vagary and 2 releases of Special Edition music from Industrial electro-terrorists, Any Questions?.  You can order each release individually (CD or Digital Album) on Bandcamp or through most major physical and streaming vendors worldwide (Amazon, Apple Music, Spotify, etc).  Pick your favorite place for music and you should be able to find our releases there.

The Floating Fish Studios 2021 Release Catalog features the following...

Imbued Vagary - Captured Moments 2 (FISHCD015) - In categorizing ones own projects, a template of sorts begins to emerge.  One of those is this series.  Imbued Vagary is proud to present to you a collection of musicians as well as a collection of “captured moments”.  In this case, the second in a series.  Just as the name implies, these are moments of raw electronic improvisation, complete with all the “imperfections” one would expect from such an endeavor.  Concepts thought up and run with on the spur of the moment.   Captured moments of time in an overall fabric of synthesized space.

Imbued Vagary - Live 2 (FISHCD016) - The first Live release in this series was the result of live performances that showcased the symbiotic relationship of men and machines in concert.  A mix of melodically inspired themes but with the non-traditional bent that makes all Imbued Vagary performances special.  This second Live release features three in-studio performances and one outdoor concert performance that highlights the Imbued Vagary Collective across multiple sonic environments.

Imbued Vagary - Noise 2 (FISHCD017) - Imbued Vagary is no stranger to brutal electronics.  This second installment of extreme music in the Noise series showcases the harsher side of our Floating Fish Studios Synth Jam live improv sessions and live concert performances. Synthesis, sampling, and special effects meld together to form these harsh and noisy sonic experiments.  As we warned on the first Noise release, “Hold on... This ride gets bumpy!”

Imbued Vagary - Wheels of Steel (FISHCD018) - Imbued Vagary continues to assimilate new members into its fold and as it does so, it expands the Collective’s musical (and nonmusical) acumen.  The sonic experiments on Wheels of Steel highlights such an expansion and showcases the turntablism of Paul Doppelganga.  Combined with the electronic soundscapes that Imbued Vagary are known for, an exciting and unique form of electronic music emerges.

Imbued Vagary - Captured Moments 3 (FISHCD019) - This third installment in the Captured Moments series goes deeper into the dark pools of the electronic ocean.  Journey into the tidal pools of sonic delight and wallow in the electronic surf created by various subsets of The Imbued Vagary Collective.  These captured moments may well have you humming some sinister melodies as you submerge yourself.

Imbued Vagary - Noise 3 (FISHCD020) - Presented here as the third release in our Noise series are a set of performance rehearsals, we had for the 05/21/16 Experimental Music/Noise show in Pittsburgh, PA.  The planned exercise was to single out a set of hardware synthesizers for use in this specific performance environment.  Though some may think of something related to a rehearsal and/or named “noise” should be relegated to the cutting room floor, Imbued Vagary takes our rehearsals and “noise” very seriously.  Rehearsing with lights, lasers, and fog, we want to ensure our own peak awareness of the experience that we plan to share with our audience.  Of course, we record all of these moments.  The recordings for this release are taken from camcorder mono audio tracks so the quality is not as good as what would be expected from an Imbued Vagary release, but you do get to hear the fog machine belching out smoke during the recording.  That should make up for the “lesser” quality recording.  Shouldn’t it?

Imbued Vagary - nIVg (FISHCD023) - Almost two years since our last in-person assembly, the Imbued Vagary Live Infiltration Unit consisting of Imbued Vagary Collective members mC2p4, Thee Sub One Genius, and Ttam Troll convened at Floating Fish Studios for a 09/11/21 livestream event on Nick’s International Virtual Garage.

Any Questions? - Don't Ask (Special Edition) (FISHCD021) - This special edition of Any Questions? - Don't Ask celebrates the 30th anniversary of the electro-terrorist unit’s second audio assault. The band's harsh Industrial sound emerges on this release and forms the foundation for their later sonic experiments.

Any Questions? - Darkness (Special Edition) (FISHCD022) - This special edition of Any Questions? - Darkness celebrates the 29th anniversary of the electro-terrorist unit’s release of pure audio sculpture.  The electronic experiments and sonic soundscapes contained within herald the beginnings of the Imbued Vagary project.
